ADELAIDE HILLS YARRA VALLEY HUNTER VALLEY 61 wine trail e Tyrrell's, McWilliam's Mount Pleasant and Brokenwood cellar doors are bastions of the Hunter's two agship drops: semillon and shiraz. Drink them at the cellar door or try them at the two-hat ROCK restaurant at Poole's Rock, Bistro Molines and Esca Bimbadgen. Along with the Tower Lodge boutique hotel, they all o er world-class wine and food experiences. But there is a lot more to the Hunter than big names. It can be a most rewarding experience to take roads less travelled and explore less visited sub-regions like Broke-Fordwich and Lovedale to visit some of the smaller cellar door operations and sample some of the superb gourmet foods being produced. De Iuliis, Mistletoe, Tintilla, Glandore Estate, Krinklewood, omas, David Hook, Meerea Park and Scarborough are among the smaller, family-owned wineries. Tulloch and Wandin Valley are other friendly places to stop o , as is the cellar door at Briar Ridge, which recently opened a stunning new eatery Briar Grillade. ere are newer grape varieties thriving in the Hunter. Tintilla, Pokolbin Estate, Glandore Estate and the Li le Wine Company (with their Olivine label) are experimenting with varieties such as the Rhone white grape viognier, the Italian grape sangiovese and the Spanish variety tempranillo. And, for a completely di erent perspective on the Hunter, there's nothing be er than a dawn hot-air balloon ight. www.hvva.com.au MORNINGTON PENINSULA Melbourne's movers and shakers have used the Mornington Peninsula as their weekend seaside playground for generations. Over the past three decades they have been joined by winemakers and boutique food producers. Gourmets, wine lovers and golfers followed in their wake and now the peninsula is alive with terri c places to eat and drink -- with more than 50 cellar doors -- while also boasting several of the nation's top golf courses. Just over an hour south of the Victorian capital, the peninsula lends itself to leisurely exploration of the vines and olive groves. Seaside townships including Dromana, Sorrento, Mornington, Flinders and Merricks all have plenty of great views to o er, while the hamlet of Red Hill is particularly abundant with destinations for foodies, including Red Hill Cheese and the boutique Red Hill Brewery. e breezes from Port Philip Bay and Bass Strait make the region ideal for cool-climate viticulture, and the largely boutique wineries specialise in cool- climate varieties, particularly chardonnay and pinot noir. More recently Italian varieties, including pinot grigio, have been grown with great success. Stonier, Kooyong, Ten Minutes by Tractor, Paradigm Hill, Paringa Estate, Tuck's Ridge and Yabby Lake produce wines worth seeking out, while tiny and rustic Hurley Vineyard makes stellar pinots. Port Philip Estate's spectacular cellar door and impressive restaurant are housed in a landmark rammed-earth building.
