fashion & models Easton Pearson A supplier of high fashion in 24 countries, Easton Pearson has become one of the most successful Australian fashion labels. Lydia Pearson and Pamela Easton's label has held its own on the Paris fashion scene for more than a decade. Napoleon Perdis Napoleon Perdis Cosmetics has 57 stores and more than 4500 counters in Australia and New Zealand. The brand has also recently become a success in America, with celebrity fans such as Jessica Szohr, Leighton Meester, Debra Messing and Melissa George. In 2007 Napoleon Perdis became the official make-up sponsor of the Emmys, providing make-up touch-ups to the attendees. Lisa Ho Lisa Ho has dressed many high-profile celebrities including Tyra Banks, Megan Gale, Sarah Wynter, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jennifer Lopez, and the brand is stocked in more than 250 boutiques worldwide. Carla Zampatti Fashion designer Carla Zampatti has achieved international success. She was recently honoured with the Australian Fashion Laureate after winning an Australian Centenary Medal. Akira Isogawa One of Australia's most prominent fashion designers, Akira Isogawa last year took his Autumn/Winter collection to the Rue Danielle Casanova in Paris. Catherine Martin Nominated for the 2008 Academy Award for Best Costume Design for Australia, Catherine Martin is one half of a beloved couple with her film director husband Baz Luhrmann. Michelle Jank Paris-based jewellery and fashion designer Michelle Jank was the first student to be invited to design a collection for Mercedes Australian Fashion Week in 1999. She has also produced a jewellery collection for Fairfax & Roberts. Zimmermann Zimmermann is an Australian label that has taken over the world. The fashion brand is in high demand and has been stocked in Harrods, in London, the Victoria's Secret Catalogue, CK Tangs in Singapore and Lane Crawford in Hong Kong. "Samantha has true international modelling potential and is an inspirational story for the proud and important Aboriginal community," says her agent Kathy Ward, from Chic Management. Harris' introduction to the international fashion circuit was London Fashion Week in February 2009 and it would be some time before she would be back home to see her family. She has joined the burgeoning band of Australian models waiting to supersede Miranda Kerr, who, in turn, looks set to carry the mantel of branding set by Elle Macpherson. Kerr recently launched her own skincare brand, Kora, o the back of her status as a Victoria's Secret model. Other names to watch include: Sarah Stephens, a Victoria's Secret 'angel' in waiting; Alexandra Agoston- O'Connor, who has worked the catwalk for John Galliano and Jean-Paul Gaultier; Myf Shepherd, a face of both Sonia Rykiel and a 2009 Gucci campaign, and a cult fashion magazine favourite; and Jessica Hart, a star of the 2009 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. And chasing at their heels are Nicole Harrison, Greta Chesterman, Sarah Lorimer and Ashleigh Wesseling. ere is no question Australia's multicultural mix boasts its own beauty bounty, but there is something about their professional a itude that a racts bookings in an industry fraught with competition and use-by dates. Kathy Ward acknowledges the diversity of Australian beauty but also points to a friendly disposition. "Australian girls are pre y laid-back, they are nice and easy to get along with. I guess this comes from living an outdoor lifestyle nine months of the year. ey have a competitive edge because if you have to work with a model 18 hours in a day, a nice model wins over the one that is a pain in the bu . ere is no speci c Australian look, rather beautiful models that everyone wants to work with." Anna Sui. The city continues to inspire her work. "I love New York -- the people are so eclectic and have a voracious appetite for fashion," she says. "There are all types of looks -- the street style to the chic to the effortlessly individual." If a collaboration with Australian arm of retail chain Target is an indicator of success, then Bae's place in the Australian fashion firmament was sealed in 2007 when her dress collections were stocked in their stores. At the time of interview Bae was masterminding her advance on Paris. She was heading to Hotel de Vendome in the Place Vendome -- with its proximity to Paris Fashion Week's epicentre, Carrousel du Louvre -- to meet with media and buyers. "It makes sense to explore Europe as I've had such a positive response from media there." Bae is quietly confident about her entrée to the fashion capital. The fact that she's married to a French man and has visited the city many times can't hurt. There is an unmistakable 'Right Bank' influence to her first retail venture, a salon- style showroom in Melbourne's Prahran. Is an expansion into Asia on the cards too? "I am interested in looking at Korea but I'm also conscious about expanding in a way that is sustainable," she says. "I made a choice not to go through an agent to distribute my collections because I like to handle clients myself. International buyers see rack after rack after rack and there is a value in the personal connection." While Bae professes to be a "summer girl" with a fondness for the Australian sun and surf, she often works seven days a week. But she still finds time to design for her own sartorial needs. "I don't really do formal evening wear.," she says. "I like a great day dress you can dress up after work with a tailored jacket. For a woman on the go." Melissa Pearce CULTURAL THREADS
